Travel questions!
[info]nixwilliams wrote in [info]transgender
Hi all, I'm going to be travelling to the UK from Australia in a couple of months (yay!), and the flight includes an overnight hotel in Seoul (extra yay!). I have a few questions.

First, does anyone have any tips for someone spending a night in the city? We'll be there from late afternoon until midday the next day (week days), so we'll hopefully have a few hours to look around. Any must-do things?

Second, I'll be travelling with my partner and we're both guys. I'd like to know how conservative Seoul is, and what might be considered offensive behaviour. I'm not planning a massive public make-out session (unless convinced otherwise!), but is holding hands OK? I get that different areas and people will have different attitudes, but any first-hand knowledge would be gratefully received.

Third, I am generally read as male and have a masculine name on my passport. However, my passport also has an F on it. I've travelled to/through Australia, UK, Netherlands, Italy, USA and Canada and not had much of a problem with this - I'm happy to tell people I'm trans if they look confused. Has anyone had experience with this kind of thing in South Korea? What is airport security like? (I won't be carrying hormones, etc. with me, if that makes a difference.)

New & shy...
[info]macmh wrote in [info]ftmvanity
Hi everyone!

Hope everyone having a kick start of a good year. For me, this is a year of change. I finally move on the top-op and will so Dr. Garramone after comparing with price and result etc...and i hope I will go on T later...I don't know...I have read some posts saying that T is very difficult to draw? well...I heard that there are 2 kinds...one for porch (sticking on your skin) and one is for IV. I am considering this after I am going back to Vancouver. I will see a specialist there (I hope I can make it!) And the main thing is, i don't want to transfer any of my does to my surrounding loved ones...like my 2 year old nephew and my galfriend. Please kindly share your thoughts with me! Thanks everyone, I am feeling I am not alone after all these years. I meet so many of you and I feel we are such a family...Thanks ahead!

Hey guys...I got a job, and am going in for orientation tomorrow. The manager, who I interviewed with and have spoken to a couple times by phone, told me I'd need to bring my birth certificate and driver's license, since I'm going to be filling out forms and stuff. A friend of mine worked at this place previously, and he did his training off-site, and filled out forms in the presence of people he wasn't going to be working with. I thought I'd have the same experience, and so now I'm a little freaked out.

Here's my questions.. )

Two more questions
[info]shenth wrote in [info]transgender
1) Do any of you know of any transgender lawyers? A friend of mine is nervous about transitioning because he's afraid he won't be able to get a job in his preferred career, and I'm looking for examples to help assuage his fears.

2) For those of you who have had double incision top surgery, how much sensation did you have afterwards? Any doctors to recommend or suggest I avoid?

EDIT: 3) Same questions about pursestring/drawstring, since I don't know which is more likely.

Thank you!

Where to go for info after FTM yahoo group FAIL
[info]kael_isaac wrote in [info]ftm
Alright, so, I contacted the ftmphalloinfo yahoo group, and was denied. I answered the questionaire thoroughly and gave reasons as to why (despite being pre-T and pre-op due to lack of financial means) joining the group would be helpful for me.

I understand that the group is mainly for people who have either had the surgery or are just steps away from having it. But I figured that the group was also made for people who still want to gather info on the surgery.

Anyway (sorry for the rant), where else should I look for phallo surgery info?

NOLS
[info]blisteringherb wrote in [info]ftm
Has anyone participated in a NOLS trip or similar weeks-long backpacking trip post-transition? What were your experiences? Were you stealth, and did that pose a problem? I've been wanting to go, and I'm hoping that this is the year, but I'd like to get a heads up on any potential issues.

Has anybody has any experience (or known somebody who has) with boxing or MMA fighting post-transition? I know that once you get into higher competition levels, T could potentially be an issue with drug tests. I'm more concerned about the ability to stay stealth in close contact with other dudes, between having my shirt off to fight and dealing with locker rooms afterwards, etc. I'm aware that a gym full of highly aggressive straight guys is not a safe place for a transman, but I think you could swing it. So I'd be grateful for any stories or experience.

I got my second shot of T yesterday, given to me by a nurse, and completely unlike my first one this one hurt like hell.

After I got it I asked the nurse what gauge needle he used, and he said a 21. Well no wonder it hurt! I asked him why he didn't use a smaller gauge, and he said it was impossible (!) to draw testosterone up into something like a 25.

Yeah, I know... someone call the pope, a lot of you guys must be performing miracles.

At the time I was shocked that someone thought that it was literally impossible to draw T up into a 25 instead of just taking a bit more time and so rattled by the experience that I didn't complain or correct him. Would it be out of line to say something to the next doctor I see? I'm not even sure I want to complain about that particular nurse so much as go "Hey, please make sure all your nurses know it is in fact possible to draw up T into needles that don't feel like they're stabbing you to death".

Are there really any citations or resources I need to print out to show to my doctor (or the next nurse that injects me) that this is totally feasible, or should it just be common sense that a complaint should set straight?

Coming Out
[info]fallenforyou247 wrote in [info]ftm
I finally got a job! Yay! Even though it's at McDonald's, I'm pretty stoked about it. However...my name is legally changed and I'm on T enough to pass (however I keep getting the 'You are older than sixteen, right?' question) I still have the F attached to my birth certificate, which they need as proof of birth.
I'm kinda leery now, since that incident in the states (I'm pretty sure) where a trans teen girl was harrassed when she applied to McDonald's, I'm overthinking everything. Should I just come out to the manager and cross my fingers? Hope that they figure it out on their own? The back of my mind keeps telling me not to sweat it, but I'm still nervous.
Thanks for reading this and have a good day.

a well written account about just some of the frustrations with the uk trans community and the NHS
[info]thebirdmachine wrote in [info]ftm
i've been feeling a little down lately because i've somehow started to alienate myself from my past self. it's like now i can no longer identify with or appreciate my past because i used to be a girl, like it's too embarrassing/painful/nostalgic/shameful. so i was having a think about why this could have been, and then stumbled across this person's post to the queer youth uk forum.

http://www.queeryouth.org.uk/community/index.php?act=ST&f=8&t=21752

when i read it i was like OMG. thanks to this article i realised all this self-hatred started round about the time i had my first gender appointment! i was made to feel "not trans enough" and i felt like i had to prove to them that i wasn't a girl. when i read this, i was just like LOL SERIOUSLY.

"You will likely feel pressured to conform to Gender norms and find it difficult expressing interests you may have that are ordinarily reserved for the opposite sex. You will have to present yourself as a text-book Gender Dysphoria diagnosis. "

this is how they make you feel! this is is exactly how they made me feel! and i didn't realise how much it had affected me. so yeah, i really recommend reading it, if you're from the UK or not. it's a really accurate and well written experience with the NHS and i fully agree with everything that was said in it.

Names and Standardized Tests
[info]espreite wrote in [info]transgender
I'm currently a junior in high school and beginning the process of preparing for college, and I'm also just starting the process of socially transitioning to another name. I recently signed up for the SAT and ACT tests, and found on the ACT registration website that when asked for a name, it stated that I should type the name I want my scores to be sent to colleges under.

This raised the broader question of what exactly I should do about my name with regards to college. I'm really clueless about the whole college prep thing anyway, so any advice would be great. Can I have my scores sent to colleges with a non-legal name, or even just an initial? I'm really hoping to be able to change my name legally before I go to college, but in the meantime I'm trying to keep the amount of stuff with my legal name to a minimum by signing with just my first initial when possible.

Any general advice or experience about college applications, the SAT/ACT, and other college-y name-related stuff would be really helpful! :)

So, I have an interesting question as both a transgendered person and someone working in the travel and tourism industry. I'm sure most people heard about the attempted bombing of that flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day, and with that, most major airports are going to be implimenting those full body scanners. I know my airport will, because Vancouver is one of the three biggest airports in Canada. Now, there are alternatives to this full body scan which no doubt include being man-handled at the airport, so are any trans-folks more concerned about travelling because of this? Are you more or less petrified because of stealth status, does not being stealth make you less afraid of it?
